Flagship 10.0: Rohrbach Brewing Company

This beer may very well be my favorite of this entire series! Rohrbach Brewing Company’s Scotch Ale. Having it first on tap after work with Brian from Buffalo Beer Reviews, I was instantly hooked. I’ve had a few that may be a close second, but I don’t think I will ever find a better Scotch Ale in my time on this earth. I was hoping to do this a few days ago but got out of work late and figured Scotch Ale deserves a clear mind and my full attention.

Brewer’s Facts

On their website in the beer section, Rohrbahc’s gives a simple and quick thought on what to expect with Scotch Ale.

‘Our flagship brew, Rohrbach’s famous Scottish-style Ale is a strong, full-bodied ale with a sweet caramel finish.’

Let’s Crack It Open

Pure magic happened when I cracked open the can. Rohrbach’s Scotch Ale pours a beautiful very dark amber color, bordering a chocolatey brown color depending upon the angle. The aromas are very easily spotted and to be expected with a Scotch Ale. Mostly a mixture of caramel and malt, the sweetness of the caramel seems to overpower the malt at times. But altogether this is an amazing combination. In the background is a scotch aroma that provides a perfect backbone to the aromas. When I hold my glass up to the light it is amazing how much energy is packed into this beer. Non stop bubbles bursting to the top.

Down The Hatch

Rohrbach’s Scotch Ale opens with a crisp yet thick malty, scotch flavor. I love how this beer just opens up full blast with it’s flavor. Even on a hot summer day, this thick malty flavor isrefreshing. The malt flavor seems to step back slightly mid sip where there are more noticeable caramel tones. It’s not a sweet caramel flavor, but more so a nice thick full caramel flavor.  The scotch flavor still remains but sits as the backbone at this point. After mid sip to the swallow it seems the malt flavor almost disappears and the caramel really picks up. The swallow of this beer produces a surge of this dark malty, scotch flavor. The finish is smooth as glass with caramel overtones and touches of scotch. The mouthfeel and aftertaste is quite full, leaving behind a thick caramel flavor with dark malt and scotch accents. From beginning to end this beer is crisp and smooth, making it  easy to enjoy.

Rohrbach’s Scotch Ale will always remain my go to Scotch Ale or fireside beer. The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn’t last very long.  The robust flavor with coinciding smooth flavor is perfect. The way the malt, caramel, and scotch flavors march out the way they do is amazing.

Closing Thoughts

If you enjoy malts more than hops, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give Rohrbach’s Scotch Ale a try. This beer is thick with malt and caramel flavor with a strong scotch backbone. With an ABV of 6.8% this could be a slow sipper or a beer to drink at a quick but steady pace. Either way I’m sure you’ll enjoy it to its fullest. There have been numerous times that I’ve settled a night with Rohrbach’s Scotch Ale and it ended up being a pleasant night. Though there have been times this Scotch Ale has gotten the best of me, just ask Kim. Either way, I will never turn down Rohrbahc’s Scotch Ale!

Cheers!

  1. I was surprised to find when I had a little sample of this scotch ale that I enjoyed it immensely. I was not expecting that as I hardly reach for these types of beers. Thankful that you gave me a sample and looking forward to trying more along these lines.
